How Do I Get Rid of the Scum Line Around My Pool
As I walked out of the hardware store with my brand new kneepads and pumice stone, I cursed under my breath at the Pool Builder, and my wife who talked me into getting a pool in the first place. No one told me that it would be me on my hands and knees scrubbing the tile line around my pool two years after we put it in. After four hours of work, my knees hurt, my back hurt and I had barely made a dent in the “ring of grime”.
What is a Scum Line?
Scum lines are caused by a build-up of organic waste in the water. This waste could be suntan lotion, oils, cosmetics, dirt and plant and animal byproducts. Since we do most of our swimming on the surface of the pool or spa, all of this junk tends to accumulate on the surface of the water. When the pool or spa loses water, usually through evaporation, this build-up of grime has nowhere to go but on the walls of your beautiful pool, leaving you on your hands and knees scrubbing your pool instead of enjoying it.
How Do I Get Rid of it!
If you’ve ever had to scrub a scum line before, you know it’s no fun! The scum binds itself to porous surfaces, like our pool finish and tile, and can be impossible to get off without a powerful cleaning agent that will help the scum “release” its hold on your pool or spa walls. One of the most powerful cleaning agents on the market is Lo-Chlor Filter & Tile Cleaner. This “magic in a bottle” will help you in brushing that scum line right off your tile line and can be used for other backyard tasks like cleaning your pool filter, even your backyard furniture and BBQ grill!
It’s Gone, Now What?
Unless we cover our pool forever and never use it again, the gunk that causes scum lines will always be there. Chlorine can only do so much and brushing the pool regularly always helps, but the regular use of an enzyme, such as Lo-Chlor Lo-Phos E+ is the key to keeping that scum line away for good. The enzymes in products like this attack and break down the waste that causes the build-up. So throw away the kneepads and do your back a favor. Make enzyme treatments a regular part of your pool maintenance and start enjoying your pool again!
